I loved this film. Sleuth works best as a very black comedy, or satire, and as a psychological thriller. Still, the film itself is well worth putting up with the less than perfect presentation.
I only really got it because it's considered a classic, and I'm a fan of Caine.

I would have preferred a Blu Ray, but it does not seem like anyone is any kind of rush to produce it.
The film does feel a bit "stagey" (as is to be expected, given it's a play brought to the screen) and dated, but the acting is superb and the changes in who has the upper hand, are compelling.
The whole film takes place in just a handful of rooms and there are only two actors in it but this film really is excellent.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 19, 2019
However, upon first viewing I quickly discovered why this DVD was so cheaply priced.
It’s precisely the sort of late night film fare you’d get on the networks back in the day ( which is precisely how I discovered it).

The performances from both Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine are indeed incredible although completely eccentric as both characters duel to try and out do each other in a game of cat and mouse and a battle of wits!

The play may be known to many and if it is on a theatre near you see it as well as buying the DVD.!

I bought this DVD as it looked a good price and wanted to see a classic movie. I never saw Olivier on stage, but even though this is just a film of a play, you can see a glimpse of what it might have been like to see him on stage. So it's a story for intelligent people.
