Unfortunatly for all their students, this new marking system is 10 times more confusing than the old one which in turn makes it even harder to work out your potential overall grade for your course. Some are merely given a pass or fail, but commonly taught masters degree grades are fail, pass, merit (or credit) and distinction. This is because they roughly match up – a first is roughly a distinction, a second class honours, upper division a merit, and a second class honours, lower division a pass.
