After about three tenths of a mile you will cross onto state park land and reach a junction with the Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail. On a clear day you can see Efland.Claim peak-bagger status with a short trek up the Summit Trail, but be aware that you’ll find a massive communications tower and retired fire tower closed to the public. The overlook area is very scenic and provides a good view over the landscape and Hillsborough. To reach Occoneechee Mountain, take exit 164 off of I-85. Some rocks recently placed beside the trail better define the path.
The Overlook Trail leads to the edge of a gorge left by quarrying, begun before the Civil War to build the first east-west railroad across the state. The Chestnut Oak Trail makes a tighter and higher loop around Occoneechee Mountain, and it could be used to shorten the hike to 1.3 miles.
A fairly new trail, completed in 2007, allows you to walk around the entire mountain.
The main trail then goes up the mountain.
