One of the engineers looked up, certain he could hear singing from somewhere above and away….” on For FDR, ‘the greatest tribute — utter silence’

This part of the book is quite moving. Robert Klara writes a interesting and perceptive volume of what happened on the trip that history has forgotten. He peered down  and saw the train paused in the ghost light, its windows all dark except for those of the last car, where he saw the flag and knew what it meant.“Shocked and humbled, the man began to sing ‘Hand Me Down My Walkin’ Cane.’ His sonorous baritone boomed across the moonlit fields, drawing other farm hands out of their shanties. In this exciting and fast-paced narrative,Robert Klara has given us a very interesting story about the final 1000-mile odyssey od FDR.Personally,I consider him to be the greatest American President who lived in the twentieth century. His political career and presidency were full of contradictions and intrigues, and even his death was not free of scandal.Because there was no postmortem, rumours started to flourish about his demise.Klara informs us that in a pamphlet it was claimed that the casket of the President waas left closed because somebody had something to hide. There were also stories about an inside-job theory or a suicide.Add these to the fact that on the funeral train there was a Communist spy who was leaking FDR's thoughts to Comrade Stalin and that the President's widow discovered that FDR's lover Lucy Mercer was to be found in the room where and when he died, and you get a book full of action and secrets revealed for the first time. The author used diaries and declassified Secret Service documents which served him to reconstruct the mini-tragedy which followed FDR's death.Klara does not spare even the tiniest details regarding the ride, and the reader can get a very good glimpse at the Presidential train which carried his corpse to its final resting place. The final chapter is about Harry Truman's first speech as the new President.Read this short book, which contains original research, many portraits and plenty of action and you will enjoy a first-rate ride!

This book was well written and kept you interested from beginning to end. The death of the president is obviously the central focus, but the story of how President Truman put together his administration during the trip from Washington to Hyde Park for the funeral is also very interesting and little known. All I remember, from those times was "Don't be fooey, vote for Dewey." For those interested in American history, this book gives a compelling glimpse of those uneasy hours as the old Roosevelt staff moves over for the new Truman one and Truman, himself, lays down the foundation and direction of the new presidency.

Most are familiar with the intrigue surrounding FDR's death, but winding the story and that of Harry S Truman beginning his epic journey around the machinations necessary to put together that voyage is fascinating. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote.

Maybe it was the subject matter, or the fact that Klara got better in the 3 years since he wrote Funeral Train, but I was disappointed.

I absolutely loved his book on Truman and the reconstruction of the White House (The Hidden White House), and this one doesn't begin to compare. The countryside between the big cities was land that one journalist [Jim Bishop]  later termed ‘Noplace in the Carolinas.’ With a schedule to keep, the funeral train simply could not stop in such locales….“The exception was a place — never identified — where the railroad tracks slipped into a narrow cut of earth with farm fields abutting the crevasse on either side…..

A genuine Good Read . 3) the journey to Hyde Park, NY for the burial and 4) the return to Washington DC.

The part about the spy, however, is very brief and takes up maybe one or two pages in the whole book. I'm sure she would be championing gay marriage if she were alive.

Photo: President Roosevelt’s funeral train en route from New York to Hyde Park, New York. FDR's Funeral Train vividly recalls the nerve-racking week behind the headlines, when his family and his government rose above a trainload of personal problems to help the nation across the chasm left by his demise. The locomotives chuffed to a halt beneath a tall wooden water tank….“As the fireman wrestled the filling spout over the hatch of the first tender, an elderly black sharecropper — awakened by the hiss and clang below — wandered over to investigate.

He also gives detailed logistical information about the two trains that carried the body, family, Cabinet, Court, old cronies and friends, and of course the Truman's from Washington, D.C., and on to Hyde Park. The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz

This is a wonderful book. It compares well with other recent books written about past presidents such as, 'The President Is a Sick Man'.

Lately, I can't get enough of this genre of writing, especially about previous Presidents, or historical events. For me however, it speaks well of the book and the author's presentation.
