Buy Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World New Ed by Ferguson, Niall (ISBN: 9780141007540) from Amazon's Book Store.

It shows on a vast canvas how the British Empire in the 19th Century spearheaded real globalisation with steampower, telegraphs, guns, engineers, missionaries and millions of settlers.

Highly recommended.

The War of the World: History's Age of Hatred Canada, with the world's tenth largest GDP, rates no more than one or two paragraphs.

That opinion has, of course, been scorned since the mid twentieth century by the liberal/ left “ down with us “ lobby but Niall Ferguson’s narrative is so well researched that it is a convincing rebuttal of the alternative view.

The author presents a balanced account of both the highs and lows involved in governing three quarters of the Earth's land surface and millions of lives.

His writing, although very articulate and extremely well researched was one sided.

The sepoy rebellion in India or George Washington's citizen army were most reactive when in the case of sepoy rebellion Cromwell tried to change religious practices and of course for the thirteen colonies the attempt to raise revenue through taxation. The manner in which the USA uses its money to gain influence and bank rolls those regimes that it deems strategically worthwhile.

The author beautifully outline the position of the USA before, during and after WW2. The politically correct view is that there is nothing good to say about colonialism and empire. Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World by Niall Ferguson Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote.

I feared that this book would be an unbearable academic treatise...surprisingly, it was easy to read and it provided a lot of explanation into fundamental questions such as "How did a small island country like England mange to rule a country with the size and population of India? Civilization: The West and the Rest The manner in which the USA uses its money to gain influence and bank rolls those regimes that it deems strategically worthwhile. A quite biased account especially when the author tries to justify the British Empire by every means available at every opportunity possible but under the garb of presenting a "balanced view". An interesting read, well written, worth a read makes the history of Empire worth an the time A great storytelling of British history, from the early beginning of exploration and british settlements to the building of society and the birth of nations that took shape in the last centuries.
