Speaking only for myself, I’m sure I couldn’t distinguish day-old bee eggs from dozens of other insect eggs if they weren’t sitting at the bottom of a wax cell. They are usually not aggressive when swarming. My husband is not a beekeeper and rarely comments on anything I write, unless it’s to correct my grammar. What would cause this and is it why the queen left?
Almost all of the time this is totally normal, and even a healthy sign. The bees at the entrance faced the same direction are “fanning”. I am pretty sure they are day-old bee eggs . One hive is robust and healthy.
It’s 38 degrees here in NC today and there’s a cluster of bees huddled up under there trying to stay warm. Any recommendations as to when I should separate the two hives and give them their own home?Soon, I think. If your bees have enough room in the hive to spread out, then chances are they aren’t too crowded and most likely aren’t looking to find a new home. Bearding is often confused with swarming. The cluster somewhat resembles a beard. The inner cover hole is 2.5″ so that should help get some convection flow going on to help remove some heat/humidity within the hive.I’m wondering why I see dead larvae on the screened bottom board of one hive. Are there swarm cells in the hive? But all the dead bees, larvae, and pupae makes it sound as if there is a disease of some sort in the hive and perhaps the queen and the rest absconded in order to escape whatever it is. Perhaps that is my own shortcoming, but my guess is those eggs are from something else. It’s like they don’t know how to get out from under there and die.Rusty, the eggs are on my clean out tray under the screened bottom which I use to check varroa mites and to close up bottom for winter.

Beekeepers are everywhere. Bees will be flying in circles around the hive and very active. We left them overnight to see if they would go back into the hive, but they did not. See my post about Bearding refers to when bees hang out outside of their hive in a cluster. This is a basketball-sized group of dense bees, all hanging on each other. And I can’t tell them where to go, but it’s becoming not thirties but now hundreds.It started back when I installed robber screens mid September. My hive is a 8 frame langstroth with 3 medium broom chambers/supers. An overcrowded hive can risk the colony’s health.When bees are preparing to swarm, you will notice that they are very active, loud, and flying around.
Bees do a lot of bearding in September, and many times I’ve seen mine hanging off the bottom screens. Bees tend to beard when the weather is hot and humid and the hive is overcrowded or lacks ventilation.
Strong colonies have peaked in population and are working tirelessly to create and store honey. Bees will come out all at once and fly away to hang in a cluster, like the one below.Notice the difference in number of bees between this cluster and the cooling behavior photo above. Are these still robbers or residents can’t tell. Bees will hang out outside of the hive until the temperature inside improves.
