I wish I knew someone else who read the book just to chat with them. I found the beginning very puzzling because it takes place both in Europe and in Africa, but I quickly came to realize that this is one of those books created like a jigsaw. Through the gloaming another boy was loping in, on a spotted pony. You get hints along the way, but you won't get the complete picture until the end. But he forgot that later as they rode home through the gloaming.

Cleared of responsibility though overcome with guilt, she alights for Africa, where she befriends a series of locals each with their own tragic past, each isolated in their own private way in the remote Tanzanian outpost.Mysteriously, the remains of an albino African appear packaged in a box, spooking everyone―sign of a curse placed by a witch doctor―though its intended recipient is uncertain.
It's a book that smashes into you. There is a lot here that is unusual and unorthodox, from the anti-chronological structure that swings back and forth like a butterfly knife to the emptiness of the lead character. Some of the scenes and moments are perfect sketches that stayed with me in my waking hours for several days. I feel several ways about The Gloaming.

There was great detail in this book and linkages to characters located in different parts of the world. Finally, the "lesson" or theme came through--apparently one needs to have a dedication of altruism.
The poverty and violence and absolute feeling that one cannot do anything to ever stop the suffering, but that one should still try to do as much good as they can, make Africa the right place to awaken Pilgrim's shaken soul and return a semblance of meaning to the fact that her heart is still beating.It took me a little longer to read, but it was worth it.
Follow/Fav The Gloaming. Soon I was enraptured by descriptions of Africa, of strangers in strange lands, and the intrigue of new characters.
The plot leaves you guessing, wanting more, not quite finished with the story when you’re forced to turn the last page. Its very well crafted and the second half of the novel told from varied povs made it much more much more interesting.
