Both Elwood’s idealism and Turner’s cynicism entwine into an alliance that compels drastic action—and a shared destiny. I'm not into romances but thought this would be an interesting change of pace.I don't get it. At every turn, societal expectations seem to thwart their prospects for happiness. and I think—I can't really prove this, of course, as I haven't read the original text—the translation went out of its way to be helpful to a Western audience, which I appreciated.

It is translated from the Chinese I did not know about Eileen Chang before reading this novel. by The events unfolding felt so completely out of my realm of understanding (concubines, taxi drivers, the shame attributed to families of tainted women, etc) that I think I just had to consume it mindlessly. I heard about this book and was excited to read that this was available in English. As Manzhen and Shijun go on their separate paths, they lose track of one another, and their lives become filled with feints and schemes, missed connections and tragic misunderstandings. The novel was published as a book in 1950.

Came expecting heartbreak and a sweet youthful romance kinda in the style of Love in the Time of Cholera but what did I get instead?! I chose this book since it had the highest rate on Goodreads.I want to throttle every character in this book, except the country doctor. Chang's insight into the human condition & psyche reminded me of Thomas Hardy. But Shijun, when he looked back at it all, treasured this trait of hers. What can you do? It is very elegantly written, conveying the innermost unspoken conflicts of each of the characters. A woman who knew about women.
